My Approach
To provide professional, straight forward, constructable design solutions for the Residential, Commercial, Municipal and Industrial market.
I believe strongly in the design process. Doing a design for your project, is a valuable step to achieving your goals using your space efficiently and taking advantage of your site's attributes.
Understanding the opportunities & constraints of your property, together with how your goals & objectives could be achieved is the role of the designer. I always tell my clients, that it is much more economical to change something on a design than it is during construction.
My goal is to build long term relationships with customers and provide them with economical, landscape solutions for their properties within their budget.

My design philosophy revolves around transparency, understanding my clients goals & objectives for their properties (scope of work), minimizing site disturbance, and moving through a step by step process that includes (but is not limited to) the following:

OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

Discussed operating impacts early in the project and securing increased dollars if necessary. Identified gaps between capital investments and operations capacity/scope of services in a Unionized environment. Avoidance of capital re-investment after the two-year warranty period. Ensuring contracts are written with maintenance included in the tender items to ensure softscape material is succeeding not in decline at the time of hand off. Extending warranty periods upon poor contractor performance. Ensured a successful hand off to operations departments by providing maintenance plans that suit current operations scope of services. Identified increased maintenance activities early in the project, ensuring its’ well-funded and the scope is understood.

City of London I City Wide Sports Park – Artificial Turf Replacement I London, Ontario, Canada I Project Manager I Value: $1.3 Million
Project manager for the replacement of artificial turf on two premier sports fields in the City of London. The project involved a written statement of work for Consulting services, review of detailed design package, tendering, contract administration, site inspection, warranty inspections, release of statutory, rectification of deficiencies and warranty holdback.
City of London I Dingman Sports Park I London, Ontario, Canada I Project Manager I Value: $6 Million Project manager for a new 6 Acre sports park in the City’s south west corner. The programming of the site called for a minimum of four premier rectangular multi-use fields, field house, sports lighting, servicing, parking and protection of environmental features. I developed the process, generated design concept alternatives, engaged internal leadership staff, RFP for consulting services and held pre-consultations with MTO, Hydro One Networks Inc. and Upper Thames River Conservation Authority.

In partnership with Community Services was involved in the Developed of the Outdoor Sports Field Strategy (OSFS). Provided GIS mapping of existing sports fields, GIS database, user analysis, site inspections identifying issues based on user comments, and a ten-year capital investment forecast. Also, provided alternatives to rehabilitate, build new fields and diamonds in the City based on expiring leases, opportunities, available land and capital resources.

Procured Consulting Services to rehabilitate two premier Class B Baseball Diamonds to ensure safety issues raised by user groups were addressed. Worked through detailed design issues with a small project team, stakeholder consultation, schedule management, financial management, tendered the project.

Completed a City-wide spatial analysis of available lands (City owned and Private) to determine how the City could expand its’ baseball diamond inventory over time. Serviceability, close proximity to highway access, available parking, size were used as key criteria in the investigation. Site visits, coordination, GIS maps, and evaluating each site for suitability, development potential were all part of the project.
CREEK RESTORATION, FLOODING AND STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

Project was initiated to fix a high-profile flooding issue. Included transitioning an existing dry pond to an operating SWM Pond in McCrae Park. Removal of existing civil infrastructure, area grading, public consultation, balancing the need for recreational space in the park. The project also included installation of pool & riffle sequence downstream, vegetation management, kitchen table meetings with residents, consideration for future maintenance equipment, and management of public expectations
City of Waterloo I Forsyth Drive Flooding Project I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I Project Manager I Value: $600,000
Project was commissioned to fix a major flooding issue between two homes on Forsyth Drive. The project required HEC-RAS modeling across 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 year storm levels to determine the best possible solution. A cost benefit analysis was performed to determine the most optimal solution for the allowed budget. Sensitive public consultation, trust/consensus building, capital budget development.

ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION & LRT INTEGRATION

Member of a small staff team in Engineering Services, called Active Transportation & LRT Integration. Responsible for landscape architectural support for the development and delivery of City of Waterloo LRT system. The project was run at the Regional level, our team was responsible for representing the City’s interests over the period of approximately 5 years. Through the design build phase, and through the warranty period. Responsible for concurrent landscape architectural site plan coordination with respect to new development applications while LRT design/build was being implemented.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS
City of London | London, Ontario, Canada | Thames Park Improvements and Outdoor Swimming Pool Decommissioning Project Manager I
$2.4 Million Very complex project with high Council and public interest involving the decommissioning of an outdoor swimming pool that has been in place since 1927. The City of London upgraded the pool back in 2019. Two years later, major infrastructure defects were found and the pool needed to be closed. Council passed a resolution to decommission and remove the pool and make improvements to the Park block. My role was to manage the capital project which involved a Schedule B Environmental Assessment, Archaeological assessment, Natural Heritage report, geotechnical investigation, hydrogeological investigation, RFP for Consulting services, public consultation, traceability of decisions made through Environmental study report, review of detailed design submissions and consultation with Upper Thames River conservation authority.
SITE PLANNING
City of Waterloo I Development Engineering Site Plan Review | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Landscape Architect Review
As part of a site review staff team, reviewed over 160 Site plan applications/Zoning By-law amendments over three years. Responsible for review of various site plan packages for Landscape compliance with Urban Design Guidelines and municipal standards, including review of all engineering drawings. Coordinate updates to Urban Design Guidelines with Planning Services staff. Coordinated with developers and consultants to ensure works are completed and in compliance with recommended landscape architectural design.
City of Waterloo I Site Plan Development for the LPGA Golf Tournament | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada |
Coordinator Responsible for assisting tournament organizers document and plan their site set up, including overhead cameras, crane cameras, tents, over-sized bleachers. My role was to ensure planned works did not intersect with environmentally sensitive boundaries. I played a site inspection/reporting role during the tournament balancing a successful tournament with environmental compliance.
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION
City of London I Thames Valley Corridor Pathway [Wellington to Maitland] – Phase One / Phase Two I London, Ontario, Canada I Value: $6 Million.
Project manager for new off-road multi-use pathway, pedestrian bridge, servicing and shared driveway between Wellington St. and Maitland St. on the north side of the Thames River. The project involved review of tender documents, address multiple regulatory comments from UTRCA, negotiation of phasing, management of contaminated and excess soils, coordination with adjacent multi-story development, financial management, hydraulic modeling, phasing and stakeholder engagement.
City of Waterloo I Active Transportation Portfolio Business Management I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I Program ManagerManaged a staff team and grew various business aspects of Active Transportation for the City of Waterloo in partnership with Environment & Parks, Waterloo Advisory Committee on Active Transportation (W.A.C.A.T), key stakeholders, senior management, and elected officials. This three-year capital program involved a package of work prioritized by the Waterloo Advisory Committee on Active Transportation, involved management of internal staff project team, procuring Consulting services, tendering the work, public engagement, Council approval. The report presented improvements to Waterloo’s most culturally significant trails and made strong reference to the City’s Official Plan. Staff recommended taking a 50/50 approach (new construction: rehabilitation) to manage the City’s trail network. I offered a high level prioritized network of trails to improve what would become the High Priority Active Transportation network. Report No. PWS2012-023
City of Waterloo I Project Managed the first Signalized Bicycle Cross-ride (per OTM Book 18) in the Region of Waterloo I Erb & Peppler Intersection, Uptown Waterloo I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I Project Manager I Value: $30,000
Part of a larger project to make improvements along City of Waterloo’s High Priority Active Transportation network. The Erb / Peppler intersection was identified as an opportunity for a new bicycle cross-ride. Required a letter from Ministry of Transportation. The project became a pilot project and was implemented in 2014 in partnership with the Region of Waterloo, Stantec Consulting.

The Committee consisted of 11 volunteers + 1 elected official. We met monthly over a period of 10 years, discussed projects having to do with Active Transportation, prioritized work, commented on site plan development and created capital programs consistent with the council approved Transportation Master Plan. I assisted the Committee chairperson in advance of updating City Council on an annual basis.
City of Waterloo I Development of the High Priority Active Transportation Network I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I Project Manager
An initiative to prioritize trail rehabilitation, connectivity, signalization, way-finding signage, and improvements while reducing overall possibilities throughout the trail network. A central grid was created made up of the most culturally and geographically significant active routes in the City which concentrated staff efforts and produced a more effective implementation strategy. STUDIES
City of Waterloo I Economic Impact of Cycling in Uptown Waterloo I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $25,000
City of Waterloo partnered with the University of Waterloo to complete a study about the Economic Impact of Cycling in Uptown Waterloo. The study was strategic in nature, in advance of Council approving the Uptown Waterloo Cycle tracks along King Street. The outcome of the study found that cyclists and pedestrians spend just as much as automobile drivers in Uptown Waterloo.
City of Waterloo I Development of a process for Bike Share Programs I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I
Report No. IPPW2013-036I worked as part of a Regional study team to coordinate how Municipalities would permit bike share systems to apply to operate in the City of Waterloo. Worked with several vendors, and ran 2 pilot projects, identified key locations for stations, developed design guidelines, and authored three (3) reports to Council on the subject.
Columbia to Lexington Multi-Use Trail Environmental Assessment | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $612,000 I Report No. IPPW2014 - 004
Environmental Assessment – Schedule C to determine how to create a new Active Transportation linkage along Lexington Road bridge over highway 85. Responsibilities included procuring Consulting services, engaging internal stakeholders to build consensus for alternatives, coordination of two (2) public engagement sessions, design alternatives, traffic impact analysis, Committee Consultation, authored reports and presented to City Council. Obtained approval of short term alternative.
PARKS, STREETSCAPES AND TRAILS
City of London | London, Ontario, Canada | Foxfield District Park Project Manager I $4.5 Million
Project manager for a District Park retrofit involving management of Consultant, tendering, detailed design, contract administration & site inspection, warranty negotiations & inspection and critical hand off tasks to Parks Operations. Completed the project on budget with $173K remaining in contingency. The new Park block contains new pickleball and basketball courts, Spray Pad, Shade Structure, full size premier soccer field, sports lighting, pathways, new parking lot, field house, storm, sanitary, water and electrical servicing.
City of London | London, Ontario, Canada | Silverwoods Park re-development I Project Manager I $3.0 Million Project Manager for a complete park re-development of Silverwoods Park [District Park].
The project involved starting the project, project charter, identify key collaborators, establish project budget, RFP for Consulting services, Public Consultation sessions, coordination with internal departments, detailed design submissions, budget management.

Project Manager for a new Urban Park in the City’s north west corner. Involved project initiation, charter, budget confirmation, RFP for Consulting Services, detailed design review and submissions, tendering.
City of London | London, Ontario, Canada | Waldorf Park Pathway I Project Manager I $3.0 Million
Project managed an off-road multi-use pathway project consisting of Stage 1, 2, 3 Archaeological assessment, financial analysis, avoidance of Stage 4 assessment and ultimately re-scoping of the project and long term protection of the archeological feature on the site.
City of Waterloo I Program Management of the City-wide Trail Network I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I $1.5 Million per year.
Worked on a staff team made up of Engineering, Community Services, Environment & Parks Operations to deliver the City-wide Trail network for the City of Waterloo from 2011 – 2018. Including receiving and implementing rehabilitation needs. The on-going program involved Capital Budget forecasting, authoring/presenting reports to Council, defending financial expenditures, managing individual trail projects. Acted as staff liaison during that time on the Waterloo Advisory Committee on Active Transportation, helped volunteers prioritize, and plan work in alignment with the Transportation Master Plan. Helped bring City of Waterloo to silver and gold level through Share the Road cycling coalition.
Region of Waterloo Spurline Trail | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I $4.7 Million I Report No. IPPW2014-109
The Region of Waterloo and City of Waterloo co-managed this project. Project involved design and construction of a 2.2 km of 3 m wide asphalt multi-use trail, and new storm sewer infrastructure in an operating railway corridor. Coordination activities included storm sewer hydraulic analysis, geotechnical investigation, and subsurface utilities, contract administration, and site inspection.
City of Waterloo I Waterloo Park Central Promenade | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $1.2 Million
Managed the reconstruction of the busiest off-road trail in the Region of Waterloo. (Laurel/Trans Canada Trail through Waterloo Park). Re-scoping the project from previous PM, from a $5.5 Million project that was over the Council approved budget down to $1.2 Million. Responsibilities included managing capital funding, finalizing detailed design, tendering, contract administration/site inspection, daily communications to key stakeholders. Delivered the project on-time and $100K under budget. A key success of this project was communication to the public through social media regarding service disruptions. The public complimented my use of social media to manage expectations and report construction activity on a daily basis.
City of Waterloo I King St. Streetscape Design Project I Uptown Waterloo | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada |
Concept Design/Pre-Design Project included designing a multitude of road cross-section design alternatives for review by City, Regional officials, and the BIA Executive. Each cross-section explored opportunities and constraints for vehicular traffic, cycle tracks, wider sidewalks, tree planting, tree cells, AODA, EMS. The preferred alternative was advanced to detailed design and constructed in 2018/2019.
City of Waterloo I Completion of the northerly section of the Trans Canada Trail I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I Project Manager I Value: $10,000 I Report No. IPPW2013-021
Highly political project involving extensive public consultation, identifying on-road and off-road alternatives to completing the trail between Westmount Road, and St. Jacobs Market. Three public information sessions were held, routes and design options were presented to Council, and approved. Report No. IPPW2013-021
City of Waterloo I Westside Trails Master Plan I Waterloo, Ontario, Canada I Value: $650,000 I Report No. PWS2012-023
This project involved updating a Council approved Master Plan to reconcile existing and proposed trails together with a new subdivision (Vista Hills). I procured Consulting services for the overall Master Plan update and secured approx. $600K in funding to build new trails in advance of area grading, and rehabilitate existing City owned trails. The project also involved building interpretive signage along an existing trail called the geo-time trail which was meant to take users on a geological walk back in time.
City of Waterloo I Caroline Street Decorative Street Lighting Project | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $600,000
Project included installation of new decorative streetlights between Erb Street and Allen Street. Management activities included coordination with consultant and key stakeholders (including utilities and various municipal stakeholders), budget review and coordination, and recommendations concerning alternate structures which would meet the project budget but still maintain the intended design.
City of Waterloo I Amberwood Trail with Wheelchair ramp | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $75,000
Designed a trail rehabilitation project in partnership with the Beechwood homes association. They wanted to assess the feasibility of constructing a wheelchair ramp between a City owned trail, and their clubhouse. I designed the project and issued an RFI through procurement to determine market value of the project.
City of Waterloo I Laurelwood Park Rehabilitation | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $62,000I was assigned to rehabilitate Laurelwood Park (west Waterloo) after a neighborhood association hired a small circus company to deliver a fair in the existing park. Unfortunately, the ground was very saturated, and much of their equipment got stuck in the park. The fair organizers decided to pull their equipment out using a bulldozer, and ruined a lot of existing trails, City owned land, and school board land in the process. My role was to assess the damage, estimate the cost to fix it, cost share with the school board, complete the rehabilitation and work with our solicitor to negotiate the bill (including the City’s fees) with the owner of the Circus company.
PEDESTRIAN BRIDGES
City of London I Pottersburg Creek Boardwalk Deck Replacement | London, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $800K
Project manager for the replacement of an existing wooden boardwalk over an existing Sanitary Sewer. The existing boardwalk was raised above grade by approximately 3 meters, was slippery for cyclists and had caused a lawsuit. My role was to evaluate replacement options, procure Engineering services and work through the detailed design and financial management of the project and liaise with Sanitary sewer staff to ensure no impacts to the elevation of the sewer.
City of London I Snake Creek Pedestrian Bridge | London, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $1.3 Million Project Manager for a new 40 meter long pedestrian bridge in the North West corner of the City of London. The bridge is a bow-string, self weathering steel bridge with a concrete deck. The design will also include interpretive panels educating the public about the surrounding natural environment and the structure itself. The project involved many design challenges including but not limited to: a major overland flow storm water route, existing sanitary sewer manhole, needing to ensure the underside of the bridge was 300mm clearance above the high water mark [250 year flood level] through the Snake Creek storm channel, spatial constraints. My role was to manage the project, project charter, identify key collaborators, negotiate with UTRCA, residents, RFP for Consulting services, review design submissions, track and address all comments and tender the project.
City of Waterloo I City-Wide Pedestrian Bridge Program | Waterloo, Ontario, Canada | Project Manager I Value: $420,000 over 3 years
Managed the Pedestrian Bridge capital program for ten years for the City of Waterloo. In partnership with Environment & Parks Operations team in a Unionized environment. Including review of bi-annual inspection report, securing funding through Council, identifying which projects would advance, procuring consulting services, and contract administration.
Project management of eight (8) pedestrian bridges over a period of 10 years. Included installation of 104 ft. long pedestrian bridge in Waterloo Park (20,000 lb. capacity), and construction of a wooden boardwalk in Waterloo Park (20,000 lb. capacity). Responsibilities also included continuing education/communication relating to operations on weight capacity limits, review of inspection program, and management in coordination with goals of capital budget.

The client wanted privacy, hard surface patio’s, stone stairs, planting and areas for entertaining. My role was largely detailed design, presentation to the client, establishing cost estimate, and helping construct the project.
Barnett Residence I Detailed Design I Construction I London, OntarioThe Barnett residence involved designing and building an 18’ x 36’ Mountain Lake swimming pool in a backyard in Byron, On.
The client wanted a large full foundation waterfall, shed/pool house, and hard surface patio areas. The grading was such that the pool needed to be retained on one side with armor stone. My role was largely detailed design, presentation to the client, establishing cost estimate, and helping construct the project.
Forristal Residence I Detailed Design I Construction I London, Ontario
The Forristal residence involved designing and building another 18’ x 36’ Mountain Lake swimming pool in a backyard in West London, On. The clients wanted a natural woodland theme throughout the back yard, a hot tub, new deck, shed with change room, and bar and hard surface patio space. My role was largely detailed design, presentation to the client, establishing cost estimate, and helping construct the project.
French Residence I Detailed Design I Construction I London, Ontario
The French residence was in Old North London, On and involved designing and constructing a new wet laid random flagstone patio on existing concrete back porch, establishing turf areas, new plantings, armor stone retaining walls, and new natural stone stairs, and new fencing. My role was largely detailed design and helping construct the project.
St. Croix Residence I Detailed Design I Construction I London, Ontario
St. Croix residence involved designing and constructing a new backyard and swimming pool. The pool was an 18’ x 36’ Olympian rectangle. The patio space on one end of the pool was raised using a full foundation veneer wall with stairs. New planting, fencing, natural stone walls and hard surface patio areas were also incorporated into the project. My role was largely detailed design and helping construct the project.
