Planning your site is a very important aspect to designing your landscape. The planning aspect involves observing and documenting your site's unique characteristics and using them to help inform the inventory & analysis phase of your project.
Elements such as how wind passes through the site, sun/shade areas, positive and negative views, grading, privacy considerations together with knowing some of your goals and objectives for the site are all important planning considerations that can help inform the design process.
You and your family may want to take advantage/maintain a particular view on the site, ensure that your guests have a path of travel adjacent to your driveway, plan for privacy in particular locations. Whatever the case may be doing some up front planning is a key step to help inform the design process.
